Good News! Mumbai's 7.5-km Coastal Road Promenade from Breach Candy to Worli to open on 15 June
BMC will inaugurate a 7.5-kilometre, 20-metre-wide sea-facing promenade between Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy and Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on June 15. Designed for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, this Coastal Road Promenade is expected to become a major recreational hub. The estimated project cost is ₹500 crore, to be fully funded through CSR.
Part of a 70-hectare open space master plan
Coastal Road Promenade is part of a larger 70-hectare public space project outlined by AECOM. It includes a five-hectare central median being developed by Tata Sons and a 12-hectare promenade developed by BMC. Approximately 70% of the area will be green landscaping, with the remaining 30% comprising paved paths, cycle tracks, and seating areas.
Twenty underpasses, spaced every 400 metres, will allow access between the seafront and the opposite side of the road. The full promenade is set to open to the public by mid-June, according to civic officials.
Furthermore, the promenade will have nine access points including Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall, and Madraswadi in Worli. While the promenade will remain open 24/7, parks along the stretch will operate daily from 8 AM to 8 PM.
CSR-led development: Reliance takes the lead
Under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) norms, BMC invited expressions of interest to develop the parks and green areas. Reliance Industries has been selected as the frontrunner due to its previous large-scale experience, including the Vantara forest in Jamnagar.
Why Other Applicants Fell Short
JSW (Jindal): Proposed only 20 acres against a required 53 hectares.
Raymond: Lacked relevant large-scale experience.
Vedanta: Submitted project valued at ₹125 crore, below the ₹250 crore threshold.
Torrent Power: Relied on partner agency’s experience rather than its own.
