High tide alert issued in Mumbai for the next 36 hours; citizens advised to stay off beaches

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian National Center for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS) have jointly issued a warning for heightened tidal surges in Mumbai and nearby coastal regions. This alert has been issued for the next 36 hours, starting from 11:30 AM on May 4, Saturday.

The surge, expected to elevate sea waves by 0.5 to 1.5 meters, prompts the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to advise citizens to steer clear of beaches and coastal areas.

INCOIS has cautioned about rough seas near the Maharashtra and Goa coastlines due to high-period swell waves, anticipated to reach heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to steer clear of the coastline and mobilised emergency services, including coastal security personnel and lifeguards.

Mumbai's Municipal Commissioner and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) have directed assistant commissioners to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure safety measures are enforced. Fishermen are advised to keep their boats at a safe distance from the shore.

Monitoring efforts involve the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, and other relevant agencies. The public is advised to cooperate with the authorities and abstain from sea activities during this period of heightened risk.
