In a significant step towards greater inclusivity, Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) at IIT Bombay has updated its MBA admission criteria to welcome applicants with a three-year bachelor’s degree. Effective from the 2025–26 academic session, the change broadens access to non-engineering graduates, moving beyond the earlier norm that favoured candidates with four-year degrees mainly engineers.

Prompted by recruiter feedback calling for greater gender and academic diversity, SJMSOM has revised its admission policy to welcome students from arts, commerce, and science backgrounds, bringing it in line with top institutes like the IIMs and other IITs. Until now, engineers made up 70-80% of the MBA cohorts.

By opening admissions to a broader talent pool, including provisionally allowing final-year students to apply, the institute aims to foster richer classroom discussions and better reflect the multi-disciplinary demands of modern management education.

An institute spokesperson noted that the shift was aimed at opening doors to talented students from various disciplines while promoting a more inclusive learning environment.

Revised Eligibility Criteria (2025–26):

  1. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks or a CPI of 6.5 out of 10 (55% or CPI 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a recognised university.

  2. Final-year students and those awaiting results can also apply, provided they meet the minimum academic requirements based on available scores.

  3. A valid CAT score is mandatory for all applicants.
