The magnanimous, Mumbai Port is finally opening its gates to the public for the first time. The Heritage Project, in partnership with Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), has launched an exclusive Saturday to Friday tour: Discover The World Within - Inviting the Outside Community Inside. This tour offers 1,500 visitors, in batches, a rare chance to step inside this historical landmark.

Once off-limits due to security concerns, Mumbai Port is steeped in history. This unique tour will take visitors deep into the port’s heart, showcasing its critical role in Indian history and commerce.

Key highlights of the Mumbai Port Tour

  • Dry Docks Exploration:
The tour starts at Dry Docks, where ships are built, repaired and dismantled. Currently, a cruise liner and two coast guard ships are undergoing maintenance. Visitors will witness the age-old art of shipbuilding, still alive at the port.

  • Cruise Terminals:
The tour takes visitors to the Green Gate Terminal and a new cruise terminal set to open in six months. The facility handles 5,000 passengers per ship, with two floors open to visitors.

  • Cargo Legacy:
While container handling ceased in 1970s to reduce congestion, the port remains a hub for exporting cars, machinery and steel, handling over 67 million tonnes of cargo annually.

  • Historic Landmarks:
The tour includes warehouses, watch towers and memorials that honour the port’s history, including a tribute to firefighters from the 1944 dockyard explosion.

  • Stad Amsterdam:
The tour ends at Stad Amsterdam, a three-masted Dutch clipper docked at the port.
