More than being a sport, skateboarding is a form of lifestyle. It has transcended concrete bowls into cultural identity and left an indelible mark on the international fashion and entertainment industry. However, it is still a growing community, that hasn’t yet created a comfortable space for itself in India.
Nevertheless, one such community, slowly making its way through Mumbai’s urban street culture, is Bombay Skateboarding Community (Bombay SB). From fearless flips to gravity-defying moves, Bombay SB has been a hub of ‘artists’ who can pull off all that and more.
Focused on promoting India’s skateboarding community
Bombay SB’s culture has always welcomed any individual who can skate. It has a friendly and ever-increasing community that allows people to experience Mumbai differently.
In a conversation with Knocksense, one of the admins, Altamash said, “Bombay SB focuses on promoting the skateboarding community in India and simultaneously building parks all over the country. We have already built parks in Nerul, Carter Road and below Hindmata Flyover and we’re soon going to launch one at Thane”.
A household name among Mumbai skateboarders
Bombay SB had further organised an event on Global Skating Day, back in June, in partnership with GShock. The event included skating competitions, ramp sessions and engaging activities, devised to promote maximum participation.
The event also highlighted Mumbai’s skateboarding community and its impact on the city’s urban culture. As a result, Bombay SB became a household name among skateboarders in Mumbai and today, it is a thriving coterie.
Knock Knock
Although limited, Mumbai’s skate parks come with smooth concrete designs, inspiring graffiti and a thriving community – a dream come true for most skateboarders! Additionally, skateboarding, like all art forms, opens up an avenue for self-expression and Bombay SB is doing its best to become a medium of change.
