Maharashtra bans artificial flowers, ahead of festive season; know why

The Maharashtra government has announced a permanent ban on the use, sale, and distribution of artificial flowers in the state. This aims to protect the livelihood of traditional floriculturists. The move is further reinforced by complaints from farmers and legislators that cheap, synthetic imports, mostly from China, are pushing local growers out of business.

Vendors in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and other Maharashtra cities, however, are worried! With the festive season approaching, many say they've already stocked up and will now face losses. While the government claims it’s an environmental step, traders argue that not all artificial flowers are plastic-based.

Flower farmers, on the other hand, have welcomed the move. A flower grower stated that the move could help revive polyhouse farming and stabilise flower prices. The challenge now lies in implementing the ban effectively and addressing vendor concerns about sudden disruption.
