International Labour Day celebrated worldwide on May 1, coincides with Maharashtra Day – just in case it slipped your mind. So before you lose yourself in the deluge of “Happy Maharashtra Diwas” messages flooding your WhatsApp, here’s a refreshing change of pace for you! Indulge in these 7 reasons why you must take pride in being a Maharashtrian.

Home to thriving biodiversity & scenic landscapes

Maharashtra is practically a treasure trove of biodiversity and scenic landscapes! Boasting a diverse array of natural wonders, the Western Ghats are the crown jewel of the state, full of rich flora and fauna. Along with this, the state includes the iconic Sahyadri Mountain Range, the Konkan region with its pristine beaches and inland landscapes of Pune. The state is further dotted by eco-tourism spots and hill stations like Mahabaleshwar.

Dotted with heritage arcs and historic locations

Now have you ever heard of The Mini Taj? Well Aurangabad holds this iconic marvel called the Bibi ka Maqbara, which is a replica of Taj Mahal, constructed by Aurangzeb! Besides this adorable historic monument, Maharashtra is rich with places like the Ajanta and Ellora caves, carved out of solid rock between the 2nd century BCE and 6th century CE, the formidable Daulatabad Fort, Raigad Fort, Shaniwar Wada the Elephanta Caves and numerous other locations. Each site offers a glimpse into the region’s diverse cultural and historical legacy.

Important ports contributing significantly to the country’s trade

In Maharashtra, the maritime scene is as dynamic as it is historic! Ratnagiri Port and Mormugao Port are key players in trade, handling iron ore, bauxite, and more. While the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai reigns as India’s largest container port, managing a diverse cargo load.

Mumbai Port, steeped in colonial history, serves as a vital hub for bulk cargo and tourism. These ports epitomise Maharashtra’s integral role in national and international trade, blending heritage with modern commerce on the bustling shores.

The biggest contributor to cinema!

Ever wonder where Bollywood got its swag? Well, it owes a lot to Maharashtra’s vibrant culture and thriving film scene. Mumbai, the bustling metropolis, is Bollywood’s beating heart, where dreams are spun into celluloid magic. And let’s not forget Maharashtra’s own, legendary Marathi film industry.

On the other hand the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is also nestled in Pune, churning out a legion of cinematic maestros since 1960. From directors to actors to behind-the-scenes wizards, Maharashtra’s cinematic legacy shines bright, illuminating screens and hearts across the nation.

Vibrant cultural heritage and traditions

Maharashtra is a state which surely knows how to party! From dazzling festivites to majestic processions, the state’s cultural calendar is a riot of colours and traditions. Ever witnessed the grandeur of Ganesh Chaturthi? It’s a spectacle like no other, with giant idols of Lord Ganesha parading through the streets, filling the air with chants and joy.

And then there’s Diwali, Gudi Padwa, Narali Poornima, Ratha Saptami and Polasa, each adding its own unique flavour to Maharashtra’s festive tapestry.

Food that’ll have EVERYONE craving for more

Well, while having a plethora of restaurants and cuisines from all over the world, Maharashtra even boasts of its own, rich and unique culinary heritage. From yum and fluffy vada pav to spicy misal pav, Maharashtra’s culinary landscape is a thrill ride for your taste buds!

Then there’s the delightful Puran Poli and Modak, sweet treats straight out of festival kitchens. And let’s not forget Batata Vada, Pav Bhaji, and Thalipeeth, each dish with its own story to tell, making the culinary heritage of Maharashtra as rich as its history.

Progressive outlook and contributions to education

The state has been instrumental in shaping the educational landscape of the nation. With institutions like the University of Mumbai, dating back to 1857, and IIT Bombay, renowned globally since 1958, Maharashtra stands as a beacon of academic excellence. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), established in 1936, has championed social sciences research and advocacy, reflecting the state’s commitment to societal progress.

Notable figures like Homi Bhabha, JRD Tata, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar have emerged from Maharashtra, enriching academia, literature, science, and technology on both national and international fronts.
