Maharashtra Day | History, parade alerts, bank closures & Mumbai events on May 1
Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Diwas, is celebrated each year on May 1 to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960. It commemorates the moment when the erstwhile Bombay State was divided, creating separate states for Marathi and Gujarati-speaking communities. For the people of Maharashtra, this day honours the spirit, language and identity they fought to preserve.
Beyond its historic significance, Maharashtra Day is a celebration of the state's culture and relentless pursuit of progress. From humble beginnings, Maharashtra has emerged as one of India's most dynamic states — home to thriving world-class institutions and a legacy of arts, cinema and enterprise.
Celebrations across the city
Each year, Maharashtra Day is marked with official parades, flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances and political speeches. In Mumbai, Shivaji Park in Dadar becomes the heart of festivities. Moreover, banks across Mumbai will remain closed on May 1 to mark the festivities.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Traffic Police have announced special traffic arrangements around Shivaji Park. Roads will be restricted from 6 am to 12 pm on May 1 to ensure the ceremonies proceed smoothly. If you are planning to head out, keep this advisory in hand.
