Monsoon arrives in Mumbai with torrential rains; Red Alert issued for several regions
The southwest monsoons swiftly advanced over Mumbai, Pune, and most parts of Maharashtra on Sunday, arriving two days ahead of its usual June 11 onset. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant rainfall in Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra, issuing a 'Red Alert' for extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Karnataka, Konkan, and Madhya Maharashtra until Monday. An 'Orange Alert' will follow until Tuesday.
Record rainfall triggers flooding, Maharashtra on alert
Mumbai, experiencing early monsoon onset, is set to face heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Its neighbouring areas like Raigad and Ratnagiri are also on high alert. Further, areas like Sindhudurg and Kolhapur are under 'Red Alert' for severe rainfall. Most districts in Maharashtra, especially Marathwada and Vidarbha, are also expected to receive significant rainfall.
Heavy downpour causes flooding in Mumbai & Pune
On Sunday, Pune (Shivajinagar) recorded 117 mm of rainfall, marking its third wettest June day since 1969. The heavy downpour caused widespread flooding in Pune and Mumbai, with Pune’s Lohegaon area receiving 139.8 mm in 24 hours. The city surpassed its average June rainfall, reaching 209.1 mm by Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Northeast India is bracing for extremely heavy rainfall by June 10-13.
