Mumbai was battered by intense overnight rain on Wednesday, with several areas recording more than 300 mm of rainfall. The downpour led to severe waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption to suburban train services, particularly on the Trans-Harbour line. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai until Thursday morning.
Heavy rain intensifies after Tuesday evening
Mumbai had received light showers through Tuesday, with Santacruz recording 8.9 mm of rain and Colaba 36 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. However, rainfall intensified overnight, with heavy spells lashing both the island city and suburban areas.
According to official data, several pockets recorded exceptionally high rainfall yesterday. Malwani received 334 mm, F/South ward 322 mm and Powai 296 mm. Malad recorded 289 mm, Charkop 281 mm, Dadar 277 mm, Kandivali 265 mm and Byculla 255 mm.
The IMD observatories also logged heavy rainfall over 24 hours, with Santacruz recording 225 mm and Colaba 248 mm.
Waterlogging hits key roads across the city
Heavy rain inundated several low-lying areas, including Andheri Subway, Hindmata Junction, Dadar, Gandhi Market, Malad Subway and King Circle. Waterlogging brought traffic to a halt in multiple parts of the city, with both vehicles and pedestrians forced to wade through flooded stretches. The civic body deployed dewatering pumps to clear affected roads. Andheri Subway was dewatered and reopened to traffic by 5:30 am.
BEST bus routes diverted, some services curtailed
Water-logging and tree falls also affected BEST bus operations, leading to diversions on several routes. While most services were restored by 10:30 am, some routes remained curtailed, including A-224 from Santacruz depot to Borivali railway station, route 110 from Wadala to Worli, and route 117 from Dadar to Wadala depot.
Train services suspended for over an hour
Suburban train services on the Trans-Harbour line were disrupted for nearly an hour during the morning peak after soil and ballast beneath the tracks gave way between Turbhe and Koparkhairane stations due to severe waterlogging.
Train services on the corridor remained suspended from 5:50 am to 7:35 am, affecting connectivity between Thane and Navi Mumbai. The disruption affected 12 services in both directions. Railway authorities said engineering teams were rushed to the site to stabilise the track bed and carry out repairs.
However, services on the Harbour line and Western Railway network continued to operate normally despite moderate to heavy rain across Mumbai and its suburbs.
