Mumbai becomes India's first & world's 4th city to publish Climate Budget Report; know key features

The largest share of the environment budget is for urban flood and water resources.

To commemorate World Environment Day on June 5, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has published Mumbai's inaugural Climate Budget Report also known as the Green Budget Book. A provision of ₹10,224.24 crore ie 32.18% of the budget is set aside for climate issues. Moreover, globally, Mumbai is the fourth city, along with Oslo, London and New York, to launch a climate budget.

At the unveiling ceremony hosted at the BMC Headquarters, the report was presented by Additional Municipal Commissioner (City), Dr. (Smt.) Ashwini Joshi. Joining her were Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Environment and Climate Change), Shri. Minesh Pimple, along with dedicated employees.

The Climate Budget Report, dedicated to the Financial Year 2024-25, aligns Mumbai’s fiscal policies with its climate objectives. It paves the way for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for the city.

The key points of Mumbai's Climate Budget Report are:

  • Disseminate Mumbai's climate commitments and prioritise a governance-based process.

  • Ensure actions are highlighted in the Mumbai Climate Action Plan (MCAP).

  • Understand BMC's existing municipal budget using a ‘green, climate lens‘ to assess the potential for mainstreaming and gain practical insights.

  • Enable monitoring, tracking and evaluation of progress of MCAP's goals and targets on an annual basis.

  • Identify potential climate projects and activities that can be cross financed through external financing mechanisms.

  • Objectives of the budget will be implemented through 20 BMC departments.

The largest share of the environment budget is for urban flood and water resource management, which includes departments of rainwater channels, sewage projects, sewage operations, Mumbai sewerage projects, water supply projects and sanitation-related activities in solid waste management.
