Several major infrastructure projects in Maharashtra, including critical Mumbai Metro expansions and the Acharya Atre Auditorium redevelopment in Kalyan, have been suspended following the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the upcoming state elections.

The Chief Secretary’s directive halts all new tenders, work orders, and foundation stone-laying ceremonies until the election process concludes on November 26.

Metro, Sea Link projects on hold

The affected projects include Metro lines in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), crucial for easing Mumbai’s chronic traffic congestion, and the modernisation of Kalyan’s iconic auditorium. The Versova-Virar Sea Link and multiple road and flyover projects across the state have also been paused.

The Election Commission’s MCC bars governments from announcing new initiatives that could sway voters. While ensuring fair elections, the freeze may delay timelines for Mumbai’s infrastructure push. Officials expect work to resume post-polling, but the hiatus highlights the tension between development goals and electoral protocols.
