The upcoming Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Green Line) is set to receive 39 fully automated, driverless trains, built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative by Alstom. These six-car trainsets will run on a 35.3 km elevated corridor from Wadala to Kasarvadavali with 32 stations, making it one of Mumbai's longest metro routes. Further, the metro authorities have already placed the first trial train coaches onto the tracks, near Anand Nagar in Thane. The project represents not just an engineering expansion but a civic transformation.

Overview: Mumbai's new driverless metro trains

  • 39 fully automated, driverless six-car trainsets manufactured under the ‘Make in India’ initiative

  • Built at Alstom’s Sri City facility (Andhra Pradesh) with components from Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Savli (Gujarat), and design engineering in Bengaluru (Karnataka)

  • Equipped with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling for high-frequency, reduced CO2 emissions and safe operations

  • Passenger-friendly design with:

    • Wheelchair accessibility

    • Dedicated bicycle racks

    • Airflow cooling systems for enhanced comfort

  • Safety and performance enhancements including electrical braking systems and strong cybersecurity measures

  • 5 years of FlexCare Perform maintenance services to ensure fleet reliability

  • Trial run expected to happen in September 2025
