In a first for its 16-year history, the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) will undergo an in-depth underwater inspection using advanced submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). These state-of-the-art ROVs, equipped with high-definition cameras, will capture detailed footage of the submerged sections to detect any cracks or structural issues that may need attention. The 4.7-kilometer bridge, a vital link for millions of commuters since its opening in 2009, will be thoroughly examined to ensure its continued safety and integrity.
MSRDC allocates ₹7 crore for comprehensive inspection—
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has allocated ₹7 crore for this comprehensive check of the maritime structure. The inspection, scheduled to begin after January 25, will deploy ROVs to capture detailed footage of the bridge’s submerged sections, representing a major upgrade from the traditional scuba diver inspections of the past.
The six-month assessment will scrutinise the sea link’s 179 foundation piers through multiple testing methods, including non-destructive testing and scour surveys. While the ROVs will handle the primary inspection, scuba divers will still play a crucial role in removing marine growth to ensure clear visibility for the underwater cameras.
An MSRDC official highlighted that this new approach is key to safeguarding the health and safety of the Sea Link. He stressed on how the advanced technology will help detect and resolve potential structural issues in one of Mumbai’s most important infrastructure projects.
