The Maharashtra Transport Department has extended the deadline for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) in Mumbai and across the state to June 30, 2025, citing sluggish progress. The previous deadline of April 30 has been pushed back as nearly 21 million vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, are still without HSRPs. Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar stated that the extension aims to streamline the process and provide vehicle owners with more time to meet the mandatory requirement.

HSRPs, featuring tamper-proof features like a snap lock, hologram, and laser branding, are designed to curb theft and counterfeiting. To boost adoption, the department is offering discounts and free delivery for bulk installations at housing societies. Current fees are ₹450 for two-wheelers, ₹500 for three-wheelers, and ₹745 for four-wheelers, plus GST.

Post-deadline, enforcement authorities, including RTOs and police, will impose fines under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act for non-compliance. Vehicle owners in Mumbai and across Maharashtra are urged to upgrade their plates before the new deadline.
