Summary
  1. Mumbai has re-entered the global top 100 in QS Best Student Cities 2026, ranking 98th with strong marks for affordability.

  2. Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai also improved their positions, with Bengaluru making the biggest leap among Indian cities.

  3. Indian metros are gaining global recognition for education and employability, though still lag in international student mix.

Indian cities have made significant gains in the QS Best Student Cities 2026 rankings. Mumbai has re-entered the global top 100, climbing 15 spots to rank 98th, while Delhi moved up seven positions to 104th. Mumbai ranked in the global top 15 in the affordability category, reflecting its cost advantage for domestic and international students.

The QS report highlighted the impact of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which focuses on global engagement and student-centric learning.

Four Indian cities see ranking boost

All four Indian metros listed improved their standings this year:

  • Mumbai climbed 15 spots to rank 98th

  • Delhi moved up seven positions to 104th

  • Bengaluru made the biggest jump, rising 22 places to 108th

  • Chennai climbed 12 positions to 128th

Strong showing in employment prospects

In the employer activity indicator, which reflects graduate employability, both Mumbai and Delhi entered the global top 50. Bengaluru soared 41 places to reach 59th, and Chennai advanced 29 spots. QS CEO Jessica Turner called India’s rise “more than a statistical bump”, stating that the NEP’s impact is beginning to show on the world stage.

Global Trends: Seoul overtakes London at the top

The 2026 edition, which evaluated 150 cities, saw Seoul claim the number one spot, dethroning London after six years. Tokyo held second place, while London fell to third, primarily due to a drop in affordability, where it ranked 137th globally. Asia’s ascent was evident, with Kuala Lumpur (12th), Beijing (13th), Taipei (14th), and Hong Kong (17th) achieving their best-ever positions.

Indian cities lag in student diversity

Despite improvements, Indian cities ranked poorly on the student mix indicator, which considers the number of international students and inclusivity:

  • Mumbai: 150th

  • Bengaluru: 148th

  • Delhi: 147th

  • Chennai: 146th

Over the past decade, India has seen a 390% rise in the number of universities featured in QS World University Rankings. This momentum is now mirrored in city-level rankings, with Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai cementing their positions as education hubs with global appeal.
