Mumbai targets net-zero emissions by 2050 | 29 agencies join BMC’s Climate Action Plan

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a significant expansion of its Climate Action Plan (CAP), incorporating 29 agencies into its Climate Budget Department for the fiscal year 2025-2026. This strategic move aims to ensure environmental sustainability becomes a core consideration in all city projects.

Key participants like the Fire Brigade, BEST, and MMRDA join the effort, following the success of BMC's 2024 Climate Budget, which allocated ₹10,224 crore to tackle climate challenges. With 70% of this year's funds utilised, the next budget is set to increase by 10%. A major highlight is the 26.5 MW renewable hybrid energy project at Middle Vaitarna Dam, combining solar and hydropower to save ₹9 crore annually.

The expanded CAP aligns with the Paris Agreement's objectives, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. Studies show Mumbai’s emissions could rise by 170% by 2050 without action, though its air quality has improved since last November, with an AQI of 104, classified as ‘satisfactory.’
