Mumbai’s first week of September is set to be a mix of calm and concern. The month opens on a quieter note, with September 1 and 2 expected to bring cloudy skies and moderate showers. But the relief will be brief, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for September 3 and 4, warning of heavy rain that could disrupt routine life.
The rest of the week is expected to bring overcast skies and on-and-off showers, giving Mumbai only a brief pause from its recent deluge. Daytime temperatures will hover around 28–30°C, with sticky nights at 24–25°C, while moderate rainfall on non-alert days may offer slight relief from the city’s weather troubles.
Thunderstorms, gusty winds & heavy showers ahead
Beyond Mumbai, the IMD has placed several Maharashtra districts under a Yellow Alert for light to moderate rain, including Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Palghar, Satara, Hingoli, Nanded, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia.
In addition, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations in South Konkan–Goa and the ghat regions of South Madhya Maharashtra. The forecast also warns of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in parts of North Konkan, North Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada.
Above-normal rainfall for September
Heavy rain may ease after September 5, but the IMD expects most of Maharashtra to see a wetter-than-usual month ahead. In August, Mumbai’s Santacruz weather station recorded 1,240 mm of rain, the city’s highest monthly total rainfall since 2020.
The monthly outlook indicates that overall rainfall will remain higher than average, though the Konkan belt and certain pockets of Marathwada could see normal to below-normal precipitation, raising concerns for farmers in these regions. Authorities have been advised to stay prepared for any weather-related challenges.
