India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai on August 13, warning of heavier rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph in isolated areas. Further, Mumbai and Thane are “very likely” to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers from August 10–12, with similar conditions anticipated again on August 14.

Current rainfall status

Over the weekend, August 8–10, the city saw intermittent showers. Colaba recorded 1.6 mm and Santacruz 3.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on August 10. Since the monsoon began on June 1, Colaba has received 998 mm and Santacruz 1,366 mm. Between 8 am on August 10 and 8 am on August 11, rainfall measured 0.46 mm in South Mumbai, 8.64 mm in eastern suburbs, and 17 mm in western suburbs.

Moreover, heavy rain in catchment areas has boosted water levels in Mumbai’s lakes. As of August 11, BMC reported the city’s seven reservoirs — Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi — hold 12,90,611 million litres, or 89.17% of total capacity.
