The monsoon season has finally hit the ground in Mumbai, with this year’s heaviest rainfall on Thursday at a record 163 mm. The heavy downpour caused water-logging in several areas of the city, even bringing the local trains to a standstill due to flooded tracks.
As MeT reports foretell, Mumbai is lileky to experience more rains in the next 24 hours. The IMD has also issued a ‘yellow alert’ for the same, warning the Mumbaikar of heavy rainfalls in Isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring regions on July 1 and 2.
Yellow Alert issued for the next 24 hours
While Thursday morning in Mumbai recorded the second-lowest June rainfall in a decade, the day progressed to be the biggest monsoon day of the season this year. By the afternoon of June 30, the downpour picked pace in Mumbai and with consistent showers pelting over the MMR, weather observatories at Santacruz and Colaba recorded 163 mm and 105 mm of rains as of 8:30 PM on Thursday, respectively.
This caused severe water logging along the suburban section between Kurla and Parel on the Central (Main) line, disrupting the movement the Mumbai’s lifeline, the local trains.
Flooding of roads was also witnessed in Kurla, Chembur, Sion, Dadar and Andheri, which lead to a 12-hour-long diversion of BEST bus services on the day. People were seen wading through knee-deep water at several locations, while motorists were stuck in traffic snarls for hours.
Amid incessant showers, two incidents of building collapse were also reported in Kalbadevi and Sion areas. However, no casualties were reported, due to the timely evacuation of people.
Rains and alerts continue in Mumbai
The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ in Mumbai for the next 24 hours, predicting heavy rains on July 1 and 2. The regional offset, IMD Mumbai on the other hand projects ‘moderate to heavy rains with ‘occasional intense spells’ at isolated areas for 24 hours, Friday morning onwards.
