Mumbaikars, a trip to Matheran should be on your cards in 2024! Here's why

Matheran is set to receive a makeover.

In an effort to preserve Matheran's natural beauty, the Maharashtra State Government has revealed an ambitious plan to revitalise Charlotte Lake, the primary water source for this picturesque hill station. Serving as both a vital water supply and a historic engineering marvel from the colonial era, the lake holds significant importance.

As part of the Centre’s Amrut 2.0 Abhiyan, this project goes beyond ensuring the lake's water quality. It includes the development of essential tourist infrastructure, aiming to elevate the overall experience of visitors in this charming destination.

A Sustainable Makeover for Matheran

An official from the Matheran municipal council revealed that Charlotte, a British-built manmade lake with a part-earthen and part-masonry dam, faces challenges due to its unique topography, including a steep catchment prone to erosion. Human interference has led to environmental damage, prompting a call for conservation. Environmentalists recommend measures such as redefining culverts, contour-trenching, and planting indigenous vegetation to address these issues.

Matheran depends on Charlotte Lake for its water supply, despite residents paying high water rates. Enhancing infrastructure by deepening and cleaning Charlotte Lake and Simpson Tank are seen as solutions, to increase water storage capacity at the moment.

The ₹5 crore project, slated for completion in a year, adopts a collaborative funding approach with ₹2.5 crore from the Centre, ₹2.25 crore from the state, and ₹25 lakh from the municipal council. A significant aspect involves removing wet silt from the canal bed, with an emphasis on repurposing it for tree conservation and road maintenance.

As Matheran embarks on this transformative initiative, the restoration of Charlotte Lake not only serves as a practical water management strategy but also underscores a commitment to preserving the ecological and cultural heritage of this charming hill station. The project holds the promise of a more sustainable and verdant future for Matheran and its residents. This developments would also draw in tourists from Mumbai and other areas, once complete.
