In a major move, the Maharashtra government has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to shut down all 51 ‘kabootar khanas’ (pigeon feeding spots) in Mumbai, citing serious health concerns caused by bird droppings and feathers. The decision was announced in the Maharashtra Legislative Council after concerns were raised over a surge in respiratory illnesses reported among residents living near these sites.
Awareness drive planned amid health concerns
Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, through Minister Uday Samant, said the BMC will launch an awareness drive within a month and begin shutting down the feeding zones immediately.
Interestingly, the BMC even found pigeons feeding on pizza and burgers at Girgaum Chowpatty. While the iconic Dadar ‘kabootar khana’ was briefly closed, it reopened due to continued public feeding. Authorities have already shut unauthorised kabootar khanas in Santacruz East and West, replacing them with traffic islands and Miyawaki gardens.
Officials stress the need for public awareness to prevent further health risks and ensure compliance with the closure drive.
