Mumbai’s 16.4 km long Eastern Freeway, which connects Orange Gate to Shivaji Nagar, is all set to be extended by 14 km in its length, thanks to the Eastern Freeway Extension project. The Chedda Nagar junction flyover, which is currently under construction, will become part of the same project once completed.
The new freeway extension will have four entry and exit ramps, one each at Airoli Bridge, Kanjurmarg, Mulund Octroi Naka, and Chedda Nagar. The amount of traffic these junctions witness has been taken into account in order to decide the location of these exits.
What’s in it for Mumbaikars? Less traffic, fewer signals
Once this 14 km extension is ready for use, the journey from Thane to South Mumbai’s Yellow Gate will be free of any traffic signals. Furthermore, those travelling to Thane from Pune, Navi Mumbai or Santacruz-Chembur link road can get on the freeway at the Chedda Nagar junction, resulting in decongestion on the route they currently take.
The freeway will also feature a 10-lane toll post at the Thane end to ensure motorists do not use the extension to avoid the Mulund toll booth. The project adds to the list of steps taken to ease traffic and decongest busy junctions in the city that never sleeps.
