Mumbai's Elphinstone Road Over Bridge closure postponed! Authorities await public feedback
The planned closure of Mumbai's 125-year-old Elphinstone Road Over Bridge (ROB), initially scheduled for April 10, has been deferred. Mumbai Traffic Police are currently reviewing public feedback before finalising the closure date. Citizens have until 13 April to submit suggestions and objections via email to addlcp.traffic@mahapolice.gov.in. A final decision is expected next week.
Public concerns over timeline
Residents have expressed concerns about the proposed two-year closure period for the bridge's demolition and reconstruction. Many are sceptical about the project's completion within the stipulated timeframe, citing past delays in similar infrastructure projects.
Sewri-Worli Connector Project overview
The Elphinstone Road Overbridge's reconstruction is part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector project, undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This 4.5 km, four-lane elevated corridor aims to link the eastern and western coasts of Mumbai, connecting Worli to Sewri. It will serve as a crucial link between the BMC’s Coastal Road, the Eastern Express Highway, and the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link.
