Mumbai is soon to welcome its first mangrove conservation park – Gorai Mangrove Park. The park’s crowning feature is its 740-metre-long wooden boardwalk, designed to take visitors deep into the mangrove ecosystem.
A 1,517 sq m Nature Conservation and Interpretation Centre will serve as the park’s educational hub. It will feature interactive exhibits on mangrove conservation, climate change, and biodiversity.
A watchtower will offer panoramic views of the mangrove forest. The tower will provide a prime spot for bird watching, attracting photographers, researchers, and nature enthusiasts.
The park will run on 120 kW rooftop solar panels, meeting over 80% of centre’s energy needs.
The development incorporates a self-sustaining sewage treatment system
The park has been built with a steel cantilevering structure, reducing the use of concrete.
Expected visitor impact and engagement
Once operational, Mumbai's new Gorai Mangrove Park is projected to draw in 500 visitors daily to the Mangrove Trail and 400 visitors per day to the Nature Interpretation Centre. The park’s interactive offerings, such as guided tours, bird observation sessions, and educational programmes led by expert naturalists, will further engage visitors.
According to officials, the park is expected to be inaugurated on May 1, 2025. If there are any delays, the launch will coincide with World Environment Day on June 5.
