Mumbai’s iconic ‘Van Rani’ toy train returns to Sanjay Gandhi National Park after 4 years
After a four-year pause, Mumbai’s iconic Van Rani toy train is making a grand comeback at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). Damaged during Cyclone Tauktae in 2021, the 50-year-old jungle-themed ride has been fully revamped with modern upgrades and eco-friendly features.
Vistadome coaches, scenic route and more!
Nicknamed the "Queen of the Jungle", the revamped Van Rani returns with a sleek Vistadome design featuring transparent roofs and wide glass windows for panoramic views of Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s greenery. The 2.3-km track has been completely rebuilt, including all 15 bridges, while both Krishna Giri and Teenmurthy stations now feature improved platforms, buildings, and accessibility ramps.
Trial runs began in late June, with a successful full-capacity test run held on July 5. The new battery-powered train includes four wildlife-themed coaches, educational displays, and a picturesque route that passes deer parks and key biodiversity zones within the park.
Designed to promote eco-tourism and environmental education, the Van Rani reboot offers a more sustainable and immersive experience. Expected to reopen to the public later this monsoon, the beloved toy train is ready to charm a new generation while rekindling fond memories for older visitors.
