Mumbai’s suburbs take a beating from heavy rain as waterlogging returns

Mumbai saw a spell of heavy rain on Tuesday evening, with several parts of the eastern and western suburbs recording significantly higher rainfall than the island city. Waterlogging was reported in low-lying pockets, including the Andheri subway.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert at 7 pm, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning, light rain and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph in isolated parts of Mumbai until 10 pm. However, there are currently no weather alerts in place for Mumbai.

Aarey Colony Municipal School in Goregaon recorded 64 mm of rain, among the highest readings in Mumbai. Other notable readings in the western suburbs included 55.4 mm at Banana Leaf and Juhu Dispensary, 50.2 mm at Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri, 48.2 mm at the K East Ward Office and 45.4 mm at Versova WWTF and Lagoons. In the eastern suburbs, MCMCR in Powai recorded 59.4 mm, followed by 53 mm at Paspoli Powai Municipal School and 44.4 mm at the Building Proposal Office in Vikhroli West.

Comparatively, Rainfall was lower across the island city, with 14 mm recorded at Kala Killa Municipal School in Dharavi, 10.8 mm at Rawali Camp in Sion and 10.2 mm at the F North Ward Office in Matunga. Wadala Fire Station recorded 9.14 mm, while Dadar Fire Station received 8.8 mm. The figures show a sharp variation across the city, with the suburbs seeing heavier showers than parts of south Mumbai.

The IMD’s evening nowcast warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, along with light spells of rain and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph at isolated locations across the state. However, weather conditions are expected to remain stable in Mumbai, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 32°C and the minimum hovering around 24.8°C today.
