Nature's Light Show: Know about Maharashtra's annual Fireflies Festival, for a getaway near Mumbai

A once-in-a-year phenomenon.

Each year in May and June, just before the monsoon season, Maharashtra hosts the enchanting spectacle of fireflies illuminating the night sky, an event fondly known as the Fireflies Festival or Kajwa Festival. These tiny bugs, also known as ‘jugnu’ in Hindi and ‘kajwa’ in Marathi, mesmerise locals and visitors with their bioluminescent glow while they fly around gracefully. Read on to know more about this annual festival in Maharashtra, for a one-day trip near Mumbai.

Fireflies, with over 2,000 different species worldwide, have unique mating rituals. Basically, what’s happening here is that these tiny critters use their glowing lights to attract potential partners. Males put on a dazzling ‘light show’ to woo females, who respond with their own luminous display if impressed. So yes, in this case, “you light up my world” has a literal meaning!

Fortunately, there are numerous destinations around Mumbai where you can witness this phenomenon such as Rajmachi Village, Siddhagad Wadi, Prabalmachi Village, Bhandardara, Ghatghar, Kothaligad, Kondane Caves, and Purushwadi. Simply venture into the countryside, away from the city lights, and prepare to be amazed.
