This change signals the department’s renewed mission to combat climate change through comprehensive strategies that promote adaptation, mitigation, and resilience.

The newly named Environment & Climate Change Department is dedicated to confronting the significant climate challenges facing Mumbai. As a bustling metropolis with over 12 million residents, Mumbai is particularly susceptible to rising temperatures, severe rainfall, flooding, and tropical cyclones. The threat of sea-level rise further exacerbates these issues.
The department envisions a resilient, thriving Mumbai where the safety, health, and well-being of its citizens are prioritised. Its ambitious goal is to transform Mumbai into a net-zero and climate-resilient city by 2050. This vision involves a fair transition to sustainable practices, significant investments in inclusive and transformative climate solutions, and robust governance to ensure effective implementation.
The department will be led by a Deputy Municipal Commissioner, ensuring streamlined efforts to address environmental challenges and coordinate initiatives across various departments and external agencies. Through this strategic rebranding and focused mission, BMC aims to build a more resilient, sustainable, and vibrant Mumbai for future generations.
