Student clubs mandatory in all Maharashtra schools: Here’s why

In a bid to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Maharashtra State Education Department has directed all schools under the State Board to establish ‘Student Clubs’ or ‘Vidyarthi Samuha’ by September 15.

The initiative aims to promote holistic development, with every student required to join at least one club, covering categories such as academics, arts, sports, social causes, and skills.

Student clubs to foster learning, culture, and skills

All students from Std I to XII are required to join at least one club, with options spanning academic, artistic, cultural, sports, social, and skill-based activities. Schools are encouraged to create as many clubs as possible, with over 30 suggested categories, including language, economics, environment, and emergency management, while also having the flexibility to introduce new clubs based on student interests.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has provided detailed guidelines and curricula for these clubs, urging schools to define clear objectives, conduct interest surveys, appoint teacher mentors and student leaders, and encourage parental involvement. While many schools already offer similar co-curricular activities, this new directive formalises the process, focusing on practical learning and skill development beyond the classroom.

DIET to monitor the progress

Over time, students will take the lead in organising and executing activities, fostering independence, leadership, and collaboration. District Institute of Educational Training (DIET) will monitor the implementation and progress of the initiative, ensuring smooth execution and regular reviews. As an incentive, participating students will receive certificates, promoting active involvement and personal growth.
