Tata Power to build country’s 1st Solar Power Plant for residential use in Mumbai

A step towards a greener tomorrow!

The ongoing debate regarding climate change worldwide has inspired people to switch from fossil fuels to cleaner energy substitutes. Following a similar path, Mumbai is now set to become India’s first city to get a solar power plant for residential use.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited will erect this solar plant in Himayatnagar to generate solar energy for the residential society in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. Once fully commissioned, the plant will generate solar energy upto 3 Mega Watts.

An MoU between society members and power suppliers

The group-captive model of the Solar Plant, backed by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited will generate upto 7.5 million units of energy and reduce 6.15 metric tonnes of carbon emission in the first year of its operations. Since the project is being developed for the collective usage of a residential society, the society is first required to sign an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the power supplier.

40% relief on electricity bills

With the commission of this innovative project, residents at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai will save upto 40% on their overall electricity bill. As per reports, electricity supplied to the residents will consist of both solar energy (65%) and energy generated through traditional means (35%).

The project will likely be commissioned by October 2023, giving a mega push to renewable energy adoption in the city.
