Up for an artsy break? Pick Devrai Art Village as your next weekend escape from Mumbai
Nestled 247 km away from Mumbai, in the misty hills of Panchgani, Devrai Art Village is more than just a serene getaway. It's a vibrant haven where tradition and innovation come together in harmony. Spread across two lush acres, this vibrant space brings together tribal artisans from Gadchiroli and Chhattisgarh who craft contemporary wonders using the ancient Dhokra technique.
Devrai Art Village’s journey of artistic innovation
Founded in 2008 by filmmaker and poet Mandakini Mathur, Devrai began with just three Dhokra artists from Naxalite-affected Gadchiroli seeking refuge under a Ficus tree. Today, it's home to over 50 skilled artisans from Gadchiroli and Chhattisgarh, working collaboratively to preserve and evolve their ancient crafts.
Devrai Art Village is celebrated for inventing “Rock Dhokra,” a patented fusion of brass and stone crafted using the ancient lost-wax casting technique. The result? Striking sculptures that blend tradition with contemporary flair. Visitors can browse an eclectic mix of handcrafted treasures, brass fittings, organic terracotta lamps, and silver pendants shaped like turtles, flowers, and abstract motifs.
Here, even Shiva’s once-still Nandi is reborn in motion. Across the vibrant two-acre campus, creativity hums as artisans mould everything from brass artworks to lamps, with evening games of volleyball ringing through the cool Panchgani air.
Spend a day at Devrai Art Village
Spread across two serene acres, Devrai Art Village offers more than just a visual treat, it’s an immersive journey into tribal artistry.
