Western Railways to launch Mumbai's first solar-powered AC local train today

These new rakes are equipped with underslung motors, offering smooth ride on waterlogged tracks.

In a first for Mumbai, the Western Railways is all set to launch solar-powered AC local Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) today. The new EMU will be a specially designed high-powered train, built on the lines of semi-high-speed Train 18. The first-of-its-kind underslung motor-equipped train is designed to run on the waterlogged tracks of Mumbai, offering commuters a hassle-free ride in all situations.

Train lights and fans to be powered by solar panels

Reportedly, the design and concept have been a part of several trials since 2018, when it was proposed for the first time. There have been reports that an underslung motor may not work very well in case of waterlogging issues. However, as per the ICF, the train has gone through several trials on different terrains and zones and no issues related to underslung motors were reported.

The solar-powered AC local train is equipped with flexible lightweight solar panels that are capable of generating 3.6 kilowatts of electricity, powering all lights and fans in the train. Additionally, these rakes are designed in a way that, increases the seating capacity from 1,028 to 1,116.

Salient features of the new rakes

In order to ensure traveller-centric services on the new rakes, the Western Railways also incorporated several features like wider gangways for more people to walk, CCTV surveillance, a regenerative braking system that allows up to 35% power save and anti-skid rubberised flooring for passengers' safety.

Further, more local trains will be equipped with solar panels after a brief passenger feedback.
