This World NGO Day, let's celebrate the incredible impact of grassroot organisations shaping Mumbai’s future! Observed annually on February 27, this day recognises NGOs' vital role in driving change.

With 2025’s theme, "Empowering Grassroots Movements for a Sustainable Future," we are highlighting seven Mumbai-based NGOs dedicated to education, women’s empowerment, hunger relief, community upliftment and more. Here's how they're making a difference!

1. SNEHA Foundation

SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action), founded in 1999 by Dr. Armida Fernandez, is a leading Mumbai-based NGO improving health in slum communities. Focusing on maternal, new born, child, and adolescent health, it collaborates with public health systems to tackle malnutrition and preterm births. SNEHA has directly helped over 400,000 women and children, impacting 1.68 million people.

2. Smile Foundation

Smile Foundation, established in 2002, is a leading NGO in Mumbai focused on child welfare and empowerment. The foundation also promotes child rights, women’s empowerment, and provides disaster relief, making a significant impact on thousands of families across India.

3. Samvad

Established in 2002, Samvad is a prominent NGO in Mumbai focused on community development and social welfare. 4. Light of Life Trust

Founded in 2002, the organisation aims to uplift underprivileged communities through various initiatives. 5. Khaana Chahiye Foundation

Founded in 2020 during the Covid-19 crisis, Khaana Chahiye Foundation combats hunger in Mumbai through relief efforts and advocacy. The NGO provides food, and essentials, and runs community kitchens for vulnerable populations. Its Hunger Map Project identifies hunger hotspots, working with the government and civil society to improve the food distribution system and revitalise local economies.

7. Bigger Than Life
