Seasick, shaky, and loud boat rides to Alibaug? Soon, a thing of the past. Mumbai is set to transform its coastal commute with a fleet of “flying” electric ferries, the Swedish-made Candela P-12. Operated by Jal Vimana, these vessels use computer-guided hydrofoils to lift the hull above water, offering a silent, lounge-like ride with no slamming or wave sickness.
The initial rollout will slash travel time from Mumbai to Alibaug and Elephanta Island from nearly three hours by road to just 25–30 minutes by sea. Future plans include a direct link to Navi Mumbai International Airport, cutting a 90-minute road journey to under 30 minutes.
The P-12 Business model seats 16–20 passengers in a sound-proof cabin with AC, Wi-Fi, a coffee bar, USB-C ports, and even a “Star Ceiling” for night trips. A stabilised ramp welcomes wheelchairs and strollers. The first boats have been commissioned in Sweden and shipped to Mumbai. An exact launch date is yet to be announced.
