In line with its objective to ensure amplified internet connectivity across the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has augmented the scope of its program to set up new free Wi-Fi facilities. As per reports, free Wi-Fi services will be provided at 10 spots in the prominent cities while the smaller districts will get this facility at 5 different locations. It is expected that the Chief Minister will inaugurate this scheme in the first week of October, reportedly.
Cities with a population over 10 lakh to get Wi-Fi services at 10 spots
As per reports, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development, Dr. Rajneesh Dubey has already issued directives to the executive authorities starting work related to this project. Under this initiative, Wi-Fi services will be provided near bus stands, railway stations, courts, registrar offices, major markets, hospitals and other important locations. While cities with a population of more than 10 lakh will get Wi-Fi at 10 spots, the other ones will get 5 such amenities.
According to reports, the former plans entailed 5 Wi-Fi centres for the major urban agglomerates and 2 such facilities for the smaller cities. Now, the authorities have increased the count of proposed facilities, in a bid to provide enhanced linkage to the virtual platforms and resources. Reportedly, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Meerut, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Mathur and other cities will be advantaged.
Local bodies to sign contracts with the internet companies
Reportedly, the project will be implemented under the Smart City Mission. The ACS, Urban Development has directed district commissioners and executive officials to use the funds from the Smart City Project. In case of unavailability, the plans can be financed through the funds of local district bodies.
For this scheme, the local bodies will enter into contracts with the internet companies. Further, the officials will make sure that the services are available at a high speed and a report will also be prepared for the same. Once the upcoming facilities are set up, a range of benefits are expected for residents across different parts of the state.
