Intense showers waterlog Mumbai suburbs on Friday; forecasts raise caution for the city

Mumbaikars woke up to a washed Friday due to the heavy downpour that persisted through the night. Traffic in the MMR was thus faced with the hurdles of water-logged roads, especially in the low-lying regions of Dadar, Parel, Wadala and Sion, in central suburbs and Malad, Santacruz and Dahisar, on the western side.

While the rains hit the central suburban local train system too, causing delays over 30 minutes, operations along the Western Line were not disrupted. Flight services at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport also remained normal.

Moderate to isolated intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms have lined up the Mumbai forecast for the day, raising an IMD Yellow Alert in the MMR and neighbouring Thane region. IMD predicts light & sporadic showers in Mumbai for the next few days

The onset of monsoon in Mumbai this year was well aligned with the predictions of IMD as it arrived timely on 9th June. So far the city has received a total rainfall of 914.1mm. These numbers are quite high from the normal monthly average noted along the years, which is stated to be 493.1 mm.
