The stretch of Shaheed Path in front of LuLu Mall has long been a concern for pedestrian movement. Given the mall’s high footfall, a large number of visitors rely on public transport to reach the destination. Commuters arriving in auto-rickshaws from the Kamta side are often dropped on the carriageway opposite the mall, forcing them to cross the busy road to reach the entrance.
The situation is further complicated by the absence of designated crossing points and divider cuts along the stretch, making it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians to cross. As a result, the area frequently witnesses traffic slowdowns, while several accidents have also been reported over the years due to unsafe road-crossing practices. Addressing the longstanding issue, LDA has finally devised a plan to develop a modular skywalk (footbridge) in front of the LuLu Mall, which will resolve the woes.
100-Metre-Long Skywalk With Modern Urban Amenities
LDA shared details of the proposed foot overbridge on its X handle on June 11, along with its concept design. According to the authority, the structure will be 100 metres long and 4 metres wide. The footbridge will also incorporate special design elements aimed at making it a distinctive urban landmark.
The project will be developed under the PPP model, with a local contractor already finalised for its execution. In addition to the foot overbridge, green spaces will be developed beneath the bridge’s access points on both sides. The project will also feature modern amenities such as modular shopping kiosks, toilets, parking facilities, CCTV surveillance, fire-safety measures, and an earthquake-resistant structure.
While LDA is yet to announce a construction timeline, the project is expected to commence soon, given the long-standing need for a safe pedestrian crossing at the location. To ensure minimal disruption to vehicular movement on Shaheed Path, the foot overbridge will be constructed in a phased manner. Once completed, the structure is expected to significantly improve pedestrian safety and ease movement around LuLu Mall.
