9 Short monsoon drives from Ahmedabad for a scenic getaway in 2026

Put your monsoon leave to proper use.

You can romanticise the rain or despise the traffic jams it brings, but we can all agree on one thing. A steaming cup of adrak chai and dalwada hits differently when it’s pouring outside. That said, getting stuck in city waterlogging? Hard pass. So, put your monsoon leave to proper use because the open road is calling. To help you plan your rainy-day escape, we have rounded up 9 short monsoon drives from Ahmedabad that promise fantastic highway routes and striking views.

Sant Sarovar & Indroda Nature Park

If you only have a spare morning to wash off the week’s stress, point your bumper toward Gandhinagar. The capital’s famously wide, tree-canopied avenues turn into brilliant green tunnels in the rain. Your primary target is the Sant Sarovar Dam, where the Sabarmati gathers momentum and puts on a thunderous display through its open floodgates. Follow it up with a slow cruise through the rain-soaked woodland paths of Indroda Park. Parking near the dam gets crowded on rainy Sunday afternoons. Go early in the morning and grab a warm cup of masala chai on your way back.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 30 km
Best time to visit
: July to September

Thol Lake

Thol is more about the therapeutic ritual of the drive. Turning off S.P. Ring Road leads you straight into countryside lanes flanked by open fields and wet soil. The lake itself expands dramatically in the rains, offering a tranquil, water-logged backdrop for an early morning walk before the rest of the city wakes up. Sheltered spots around the lake trail are virtually non-existent. Pack a sturdy umbrella, wear waterproof shoes, and keep a spare towel in the boot.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 27 km
Best time to visit
: July to September

Zanzari Waterfalls

Zanzari comes alive when the Vatrak River swells after a solid downpour. This is a series of rushing rapids crashing over massive rocks. The countryside drive through Dehgam offers classic rural views, making the journey just as enjoyable as the arrival. The final 1.5 km requires walking across uneven rocks. Skip the flip-flops and wear trail shoes with solid grip. Do not attempt to wade into the main river channel, the currents are surprisingly deceptive.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 75 km
Best time to visit: August to October (after heavy upstream rain)

Hathmati Dam & Reservoir

For those who prefer open horizons over commercial tourist traps, Hathmati Dam is an absolute gem. The massive earth-dam embankment offers sweeping views of breezy grey skies meeting open water, bordered by distant rolling hills. It feels remote and wonderfully unpolished. Commercial infrastructure here is basically non-existent. Pack your own camp chairs, a flask of hot tea, and some freshly made sandwiches for a proper tailgate picnic by the water.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 84 km
Best time to visit
: August to September

Idar Hill Fort

Rising sharply from the plains, the town of Idar is famous for its massive granite boulders. In the monsoon, these dark rocks get coated in bright moss, while fog clings tightly to the historic ruins of Ruthi Rani no Mahalat the summit. The drive via Himatnagar is smooth, leading to sweeping views of the Sabarkantha plains. The climb involves 400 to 500 stone steps that get slick in the rain. Start your ascent before 8:00 am to beat the humidity.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 113 km
Best time to visit
: August to October

Taranga Hills & Dharoi Dam

Why settle for one stop when you can link two? Head up through Visnagar to Dharoi Dam first, where the massive reservoir backwaters stretch out like an inland sea. From there, take the winding road up to the ancient Taranga Jain Temple complex, perched high in the Aravalli range with sweeping views over mist-laden valleys. Hit the Dharoi Dam viewpoint in the morning, then head to Taranga. On the highway near Kheralu, pull over at roadside eateries for a plate of freshly fried, piping-hot dalwada.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 129 km
Best time to visit
: July to October

Champaner-Pavagadh

This trip starts with the driving joy of the NE1 expressway before turning toward the silhouette of Pavagadh Hill. The 15th-century UNESCO-listed mosque and fort ruins at the base look straight out of a period film when framed by rain-soaked green slopes and seasonal waterfalls. If you plan to take the ropeway up to Kalika Mata Temple, buy your tickets online in advance to bypass massive weekend queues.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 147 km
Best time to visit
: July to October

Polo Forest

Polo Forest is the undisputed monarch of monsoon drives from Ahmedabad. Tucked away in the Vijaynagar range, this thick forest explodes into emerald shades with the first rains. Winding roads lead you past the overflowing Harnav River check dams and ancient, moss-covered 15th-century temple ruins nestled deep within the trees. Leave Ahmedabad by 5:30 am. You will get clear roads through Vijapur and hit the forest long before the tourist buses arrive.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 147 km
Best time to visit
: July to September

Balaram Ambaji Sanctuary

Heading north toward the Rajasthan border leads you into the northern deciduous forests of Balaram Ambaji. The drive along the Mehsana-Palanpur stretch is smooth and the destination offers a refined forest experience with streams trickling across rocky riverbeds and views of rain-drenched hill slopes. Book a high tea or lunch table at the historic Balaram Palace Hotel. The view of the green valley from its terrace is worth the journey alone.

Distance from Ahmedabad: 180 km
Best time to visit: August to October
