Ahmedabad’s relentless heat has had us all cooped up indoors. But relief is on the horizon! Pre-monsoon rains in the city are expected to begin between June 7-12, with the main downpours anticipated to arrive in the last week. So very soon, we can expect the city to turn green again and finally give us a reason to breathe in fresh air.

So, as we eagerly await the approaching monsoons, here are 5 must-try experiences in Ahmedabad, during the rainy season! Bookmark this list for the coming weeks.

Take a rainy walk by the Riverfront

There’s something magical about the Sabarmati Riverfront during the monsoons. As the gentle drizzle begins, the usually bustling area takes on a serene, almost poetic charm. Couples, families, and solo strollers alike can be seen enjoying the refreshing cool breeze and the rhythmic patter of rain on the river. It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beauty of Ahmedabad in monsoon.

Other spots like Kankaria Lake, Parimal Garden, and Law Garden also become breathtaking rain-soaked havens. So we cannot wait to grab our umbrellas, put on some comfy shoes, and enjoy the pleasure of a walk in the rain.

Savour Chai and Daal Vadas

No monsoon experience in Ahmedabad is complete without indulging in some piping hot Daal Vadas accompanied by a steaming cup of chai. Street vendors across the city, start prepping their stalls, ready to serve these delicious, crispy fritters that pair perfectly with the cool, rainy weather. The combination of the spicy Daal Vada with the soothing warmth of chai is an Amdavadi monsoon classic.

So when in the city, don’t miss out on this snack! You can also savor Bhutta, Maggie, Vadapav, and other monsoon treats that street vendors offer.

Set off on scenic drives along SG Highway and SP Ring Road

When the first rains hit, one of the best ways to enjoy the monsoon is by taking a leisurely drive along the SG Highway or SP Ring Road. Almost every Amdavadi would agree! The usually arid surroundings come alive with a burst of greenery, which makes the journey all the more enjoyable. It’s a great way to experience the transformation of the city, from the comfort of one’s car. And yes, halting at a tapri for some garama garam Chai with Maska-Bun is mandatory!

Cycle around the city’s green stretches

“Maaru mann mor bani thanghat kare!” Sometimes, amidst the chaos of adulting, there’s an undeniable urge to rediscover the carefree joys of childhood. So, why not embrace the rain as a chance to do just that?

Cycling around green stretches like Kankaria Lake or the narrow lanes of the Old City is incredibly fun and 100% Amdavadi-approved! You can rent bicycles from MyByk and explore the roads, immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere and historical charm of the area. For a more scenic route, head to Sabarmati Riverfront. The well-paved paths and picturesque views make it an ideal spot for a leisurely ride.

Curl up with a good book at a cosy cafe

For those who prefer a quieter way to enjoy the rains, Ahmedabad’s cosy cafes provide the perfect refuge. Find a comfy corner, curl up with a good book, and enjoy the soft murmur of rain outside with a hot cup of coffee or chai in hand.

Cafes like Zen Cafe, Aarambh Cafe, Kamla Cafe, Toritos, and Project Cafe offer just the right ambience to relax, read, and watch the world go by as the monsoon weaves its magic outside. It’s a cosy, comforting way to spend a rainy afternoon or evening.
