Following the historic success of Chandrayaan-3 and the revelations surrounding Aditya-L1, ISRO has unveiled another momentous development. The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Ahmedabad facility will play a central role in India’s first ever crewed space mission, Gaganyaan.
This ambitious three-day mission aims to fly three astronauts into a 400km orbit above Earth’s surface. Their safe return will be orchestrated via a planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean. While the rocket itself will take shape elsewhere, Ahmedabad will serve as the nerve center for crafting all internal systems vital to the crewed mission, encompassing intricate communication systems.
Building Gaganyaan’s key components
Key components of the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, specifically the human-habitable cabin and communication systems, will undergo meticulous development at ISRO’s Ahmedabad facility. The cabin, thoughtfully designed to accommodate three astronauts, boasts a suite of amenities including lighting systems, internet connectivity, cameras, fire suppression capabilities and two display panels for real-time parameter monitoring.
Innovative camera sensors will vigilantly monitor oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, ensuring the astronauts’ well-being throughout the mission. In preparation for Gaganyaan’s launch, ISRO plans to dispatch two satellites into geostationary orbit to bolster mission communications.
Test Vehicle D1: A crucial prelude to the mission
Marking a significant milestone, a test vehicle, christened Test Vehicle D1 (TV D1), is slated for launch by the end of October. TV D1 will serve as a precursor to the Gaganyaan mission, featuring a crew module identical to what astronauts will ultimately embark upon. The primary objective of this vehicle is to rigorously test the crew’s escape sequence, fortifying astronaut safety in case of unforeseen complications during launch or splashdown.
Nilesh Desai, Director of the Space Applications Center (SAC) at ISRO Ahmedabad, has been at the forefront of these endeavors, emphasizing the critical role played by this imminent test vehicle in safeguarding the Gaganyaan mission’s success.
