Gujarat braces for Cyclone Biparjoy; 137 trains cancelled by Western Railways

India is on toes as it braces for Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to cross near Jakhau port in Gujarat by June 15 evening as a ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ (VSCS). The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warning in Saurashtra-Kutch and Gujarat regions on June 15 and 16. As a precautionary measure, Western Railways has cancelled 137 trains passing through areas to be affected by cyclone.

On June 12, as many as 56 trains heading to Gandhidham, Veraval, Okha, and Porbandar were short-terminated at Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Surendranagar.

Measures taken by Western Railways and State Authority

Almost 137 trains have been cancelled and short-terminated by Western Railways as a precautionary measure in view of the safety of passengers and train operators. Some other measures taken by WR prior the cyclonic disturbance include:

• Disaster management rooms and help desks at Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Veraval, Hapa, Surendranagar, Morbi, Gandhidham, and Bhuj.

• Catering stalls will function during the cyclone, stocked with water and food supplies for everyone.

• Arrangements have been made with state transport services to transport passengers to their destinations, and ambulances are on standby for emergencies.

• Loading and unloading activities have been suspended at Kandla Port, Navlakhi Port, Pipavav Port and Bedi Port (Rajkot Division).

• Restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Double Stack Container trains, both inward and outward, as well as on inward traffic for all terminals of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar divisions until June 15, effective immediately.
