In a major boost to India’s first bullet train project, Japan will provide two high-speed Shinkansen train sets, the E5 and E3 series, free of cost to assist in testing the under-construction Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. According to The Japan Times, the trains, retrofitted with inspection equipment, will arrive in early 2026 to collect critical data on India’s unique conditions, including extreme heat and dust.
Shinkansen E5, E3 set to prep ground for E10
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, largely funded by a 0.1% interest loan from Japan over 50 years, marks a major milestone in India’s rail modernisation journey. Initially, the E5 series Shinkansen, capable of speeds up to 320 kmph, was planned for passenger service. However, delays led to a shift toward the next-generation E10 model, expected by the early 2030s.
To bridge the gap, Japan will donate E5 and E3 train sets, which will be used for testing and inspection. Their performance will help fine-tune the E10’s design to suit Indian conditions, such as high temperatures and dust. Both models are renowned for their aerodynamic build and cutting-edge safety systems.
While the high-speed corridor is set for a partial launch in August 2027, the donated trains will play a crucial role in preparing the ground for India’s future-ready high-speed rail network.
