For Gujaratis, the monsoon season is nothing short of magical. The arrival of rain turns the arid land into a lush, green haven, sparking joy and nostalgia in every heart. This enchanting transformation has inspired numerous songs that celebrate the season’s beauty and vitality.

So here are 5 celebrated Gujarati folk and popular songs that encapsulate the spirit of monsoon, bringing back vivid memories and heartfelt emotions associated with this beloved time of the year.

Mor Bani Thangat Kare

“Mor Bani Thangat Kare” is a well-known Gujarati song translated by Zaverchand Meghani in 1944 and later composed by Hemu Gadhavi. Originally a Bengali song by Rabindranath Tagore, this Gujarati version retains the traditional tone of the Charans.

It has become a cherished part of Gujarat’s monsoon folk literature, poetically depicting the joy and exhilaration brought by the rains. The song describes how rain transforms nature, making fields, rivers, birds, and animals dance with joy and rejuvenation. It’s impossible to resist dancing and doing garba when you hear this song.

Rang Morla

“Rang Morla” is a beautiful Gujarati folk song written by Padma Shri Kaag Baapu. Set against the backdrop of monsoon, with dark clouds indicating heavy rains, it portrays a young woman longing for her beloved’s company. Fearing they might be separated if he travels for work, she tries to convince him to stay with her.

The skies, clouds, thunderstorms, forests, mountains, and rivers all harmonize with the season, reflecting the young woman’s tender emotions.

Aabh Ma Zini Zabuke

“Aabh Ma Zini Zabuke” is another cherished folk song from Kathiawad, traditionally sung during the monsoon season. The song narrates the story of a woman trying to prevent her beloved from leaving for royal service as the rains begin.

The monsoon’s onset is seen as a time for togetherness, and the woman’s plea to keep her beloved close during this season resonates with many listeners. The song evokes nostalgia, bringing back memories of simpler times when life revolved around seasonal changes and the monsoon was a time for community and connection.

Vadaldi Varsi Re

“Vadaldi Varsi Re” is a classic Gujarati song that beautifully celebrates the monsoon. The song tells the charming story of a sister asking her brother for different ornaments. However, with the onset of rain, she lovingly urges him to come home early, highlighting the protective and caring bond between siblings.

The melody and lyrics capture the essence of the rainy season, making it a heartfelt and relatable tune that resonates with the warmth of family ties and the joy of monsoon.

Va Vaya Ne Vadal Umatya

“Va Vaya Ne Vadal Umatya,” attributed to Narsinh Mehta, is said to be a Krushna Ras. While not entirely about rain, it encompasses the beauty of the season, illustrating the poetic charm and the profound connection between nature and human emotions during the monsoon.

These songs beautifully capture the essence of the monsoon, portraying the season’s magic and its deep emotional impact on people’s lives.
