In an effort to combat plastic pollution, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a campaign to distribute 32 lakh cloth bags made from cotton and polyester material to 16 lakh households across the city. This initiative, with an investment of ₹11.81 crore, aims to provide each household with two reusable cloth bags, thereby reducing the reliance on single-use plastics.
To promote sustainable practices among residents
This move aligns with the central government’s directive banning plastic bags thinner than 120 microns and single-use plastics from December 31, 2022. By providing reusable alternatives, the AMC aims to facilitate compliance with these regulations and promote sustainable practices among residents.
The distribution of cloth bags is part of a broader strategy to address the city’s waste management challenges. Ahmedabad generates approximately 4,500 metric tonnes of waste daily, with plastic waste being a significant component. By reducing plastic usage, the initiative is expected to alleviate issues such as clogged drains, environmental pollution, and landfill overflow.
Public cooperation is crucial for the success of this campaign. While the AMC provides the necessary resources, residents are encouraged to adopt these eco-friendly alternatives in their daily routines.
This initiative also contributes to broader environmental conservation efforts. Reducing plastic dependency lowers carbon emissions associated with plastic production and disposal.
