The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued closure notices to six industrial units operating in Nandesari GIDC due to their violation of environmental regulations and continuous pollution of the Mini River.
These units have been persistently releasing untreated industrial effluents into the river, leading to its contamination.
Industrial effluents causing water pollution
Gujarat finds itself ranked fourth among the top five states with highly polluted rivers, with a startling 20 rivers falling under the critically polluted category. The primary cause behind this environmental crisis is the unabated discharge of untreated industrial effluents into the rivers. The Vadodara Petrochemical Complex, Nandesari, Ankleshwar, Vapi, Vatva, and Hazira near Surat house are several major polluting industries contributing to this grave issue.
Recently, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) conducted a scientific analysis of water samples extracted from polluted rivers. The findings revealed alarmingly high levels of pollution, mainly attributed to industrial units in the Nandesari GIDC area directly releasing contaminated water into the public domain, thereby polluting the Mini and Mahisagar rivers.
GPCB makes a move
Considering this severe violation of environmental regulations, the GPCB made the decision to close down six units responsible for the pollution. To enforce this action, Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited has been instructed to disconnect the electricity supply to these units. These units include Jaitik International, Link Pharma chem, Megha Dychem, Shakti Ammonia, Panoli intermediate unit 3, and unit 1 to 8.
In an effort to identify other polluting units and combat river pollution, Babubhai Patel, the chairman of the Nandesari Industrial Association, has announced a reward for anyone providing information regarding pollution-related activities by units within the Nandesari GIDC area. This initiative aims to curb the ongoing environmental degradation and protect the region’s rivers from further contamination.
