Ahmedabad’s Hebatpur and Mumatpura lakes are poised for a significant transformation as part of a citywide effort to enhance water conservation and recreational spaces. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a redevelopment project worth ₹8.17 crore, aimed at deepening the lakes, improving rainwater storage, and creating green spaces for residents.

Know about the key features of the major redevelopment

The initiative, led by AMC’s Water Committee, focuses on addressing environmental concerns through strategic urban planning. Hebatpur Lake, located in Thaltej, will undergo improvements worth ₹3.86 crore, while Mumatpura Lake in Jodhpur will receive ₹4.31 crore for its redevelopment. The project includes the installation of stormwater lines to channel rainwater efficiently into the lakes, facilitating groundwater recharge.

To prevent soil erosion and encroachments, a stone wall and fencing will be constructed around the lakes. In addition, the surrounding areas will be landscaped with tree plantations, flower gardens, and walking tracks to encourage community engagement. Recreational facilities such as gym equipment, seating areas, and children’s play zones will also be incorporated.

A highlight of the project is the construction of shaft wells designed to capture and store rainwater, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the surrounding regions. Additionally, accumulated silt will be removed and repurposed for gardening, further contributing to the green initiative.

Both the lake to feature small island at the centre

Both lakes will feature a small island at their centre, similar to Kankaria’s Naginawadi, with benches, gazebos, and shaded seating areas for senior citizens. The project aims to blend conservation with leisure, making these lakes a vital part of Ahmedabad’s urban landscape.

With work set to begin soon, the AMC hopes that this redevelopment will bolster Ahmedabad’s efforts towards sustainable urban development while providing citizens with improved public spaces.
