Ahmedabad's Vechaar Utensils Museum conveys unique narratives of India's culinary legacy

Khushbu Kirti

Engulfing a rich repository of utensils from various eras of India, this museum is a unique reminder of the country's past. Preserving Gujarat's culinary legacy whilst showcasing artisans' exquisite craftsmanship, Ahmedabad's Vechaar Utensils Museum boasts as many as 4,500 antique utensils, ancient tools, and more.

Built in 1981, the museum, VECHAAR, stands for Vishalla Environmental Centre for Heritage of Art, Architecture and Research. Located in the premises of Ahmedabad's Vishaala Restaurant, some of these rare pieces displayed here date back a 1,000 years! So, on your next weekend, be sure to pay a visit.

All about the Vechaar museum

Designed by Surendra C Patel in 1981 and built with the aid of Jyotindra Jain, the Vechaar Utensils Museum is placed inside a quaint hut of bamboo, straw, mud, and dung. The hut, surrounded by greenery, holds the exclusive utensil collection that one can see today.

Conveying somewhat an emotion aesthetic, the cornucopia of intricate art work displayed here grabs the spectator's attention. The diversity in the materials used is also wide — brass, silver, gold, wood, terracotta, ivory, and bronze work. From copper pressure cookers and storage vessels to hookahs and vintage pots, from urns and spittoons to jugs and locks, the diverse range of vessels here draws a vivid picture for the visitor of how a rural household and its kitchen would've looked like.
