Ahmedabad’s Road Transport Office (RTO) has intensified its crackdown on traffic violations, suspending or cancelling an unprecedented 1,575 licences between January and November 2024. This marks a significant rise compared to previous years and is the highest figure in the past five years.

On average, over four licences were suspended daily in 2024, a sharp increase from three every two days in 2023. Only 571 licences were suspended last year, while the figures were even lower in 2021 and 2022, at 309 and 319, respectively. The pandemic-affected 2020 saw negligible action.

The crackdown applies exclusively to the GJ-01 jurisdiction of Ahmedabad, where stricter enforcement under the Motor Vehicles Act has been pivotal. “Drivers who repeatedly violate traffic rules face fines of Rs 1,000 and a three-month licence suspension,” said an RTO official.

Adding to this, Ahmedabad traffic police recommended action against 7,700 offenders across the state this year. This surge in enforcement reflects the authorities’ efforts to improving road safety and ensuring adherence to traffic laws.
