Sweet, salty & controversial: Know about Manek Chowk's famous Pineapple Sandwich

You either love it or hate it—there's no in-between!

Zeal Jani

Ahmedabad's Manek Chowk is a foodie paradise, buzzing with energy and offering a dizzying array of street food that draws in both locals and tourists. Among the countless delicious options, one dish stands out and sparks endless debate: the Pineapple Sandwich.

This quirky culinary creation, beloved by some and bewildering to others, has become a symbol of Manek Chowk’s diverse and experimental food scene.

The creation: Lots of butter, cheese and pineapple!

The Pineapple Sandwich at Manek Chowk is crafted with a three-layered approach that combines sweet and savoury elements. The first slice is generously buttered and topped with jam or sauce, then stuffed with chocolate chips and a chunk of pineapple.

The second slice, also buttered and topped with flavorings, is layered on, with a generous amount of Amul cheese grated between the second and third slices. The final slice, again buttered and topped, completes the sandwich, creating a unique blend of flavours.

The skepticism: the divide in opinions

However, not everyone shares the same enthusiasm. For some, the idea of mixing pineapple with cheese in a sandwich is a step too far. Critics argue that the flavours clash rather than complement each other, creating an odd taste experience that doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The divide in opinions about the Pineapple Sandwich has, in fact, added to its allure. Many come to Manek Chowk specifically to try this contentious dish, driven by curiosity and the desire to form their own opinions.

It has become a rite of passage for foodies visiting Ahmedabad, sparking conversations and debates among friends and family! Have you tasted it? If so, where do you stand—are you a fan or a skeptic?
